Walter Elbertson is the shy, asthmatic son of a professor who goes on vacation to Spain. He leaves by tourist bus, where he gets a seat next to Lila Fisher, a British lady. You won't miss much if you skip this. A tragicomic relationship film, a bit of a road movie too, about two inhibited individuals who gradually grow closer and start a relationship during a vacation in Spain. The woman is much older than the man, but it doesn't bother them. She is a stiff woman with a presumed aristocratic background, who later in the film cannot bring herself to say that they are lovers. Others might just think they are having sex. He is an asthma-suffering and solitary rich kid who, during the trip, gradually breaks free from the inhibitions of his rigid upbringing.
I found the humor to be very unique. It is also a film with a very old-fashioned image, which is why I fear it won't be enjoyed by many. Nevertheless, Smith and Bottoms play quite well together. They are more theatrical roles, but the moments when they grow closer are among the best moments of the film because it feels authentic. A solid 3*
Fun fact for the Belgians: the Spanish Duke Jaime Mora y Aragon plays himself. He was the brother of our Queen Fabiola.
