Requiem for Detroit? plot
For a long time, Detroit was America's fourth-largest city and perhaps more than any other city it embodies the "American Dream": factories, malls, highways, and suburbs sprang up like mushrooms. In recent years, however, that American dream turned into a nightmare. The car industry, once the engine of the city's economic boom, is sputtering and in danger of coming to a complete standstill. Detroit is deserted and has become 40 percent 'prairie' again. Foliage grows through abandoned office buildings and homes, and over cars and streetlights. The city's main activities seem reduced to crime, vandalism and dog fighting. But there is hope. Streets become the backdrop for art and agriculture returns to the city. It is the young people who are leading the charge here. Detroit is once again a frontrunner, but in a completely different direction.
