Return of the Killer Shrews plot

"The Killer Shrews are back, and only one man remembers how to stop them...or die trying!"

Captain Thorne Sherman is sleeping off his daze when his mate accepts the assignment to transport a crew that wants to record a reality show to an island. Far too late, the captain finds out that he is on his way to the island he hoped never to see again, but dutifully sails on. His fear is not without reason: once busy filming, the TV crew is attacked by the shrews. They decide to flee to a building that was once the laboratory of a mad professor, but that also turns out to be a bad idea…

It seemed like such a nice idea to make a remake of a film from the 50s, which is now free of rights (The Killer Shrews). Now in color and with better special effects (CGI) and nice to have a single actor from the original return. The nice idea unfortunately failed in this case, mainly because the CGI is too clumsy for words. The monsters float above the ground because the makers forgot to add a shadow on the ground (one of the basic rules I think). Blood is an even dark red spot here, as if there is paint on the film itself.

I hope that Gila!, a remake of The Giant Gila Monster, will live up to expectations.

A sequel to Attack of the Killer Shrews from 1959. That was not a great film and neither is the sequel. You would expect the effects to be better or at least to come up with something surprising in terms of content. No. The computer animations are lousy. I would rather see the costumed dogs from 1959 than the modern botch from 2012. The story follows the usual paths and adds nothing. They try to camouflage the empty shell with humor, but that is also of a lousy level and makes the film even more annoying.

In the film, hero James Best returns, who was also there in 1959. For unclear reasons, he returns to the island where he was once attacked by large mice. In the film, some old fragments from the original film are pasted at regular intervals, which are easy to recognize because of their black and white nature. Nice if you have seen the first film. Apart from that, they have no added value. No interesting connections are made between the two films. The Return of the Killer Shrews prefers to tell its own miserable story.

The humor is not funny. The characters are bloody annoying. Bad effects too. The bloodthirsty beasts are cobbled together without love and make a pathetic impression. Well fitting in a pathetic film. That's true.

I went into the film with a lot of goodwill. That was quickly burned out and made way for a deep weariness. Sometimes you hear or read that someone remarks that a film is so bad that it becomes good again. I have no idea how that works. A nonsensical remark, I think. The simple truth for this film is that it is hopelessly bad. And with that observation it did not suddenly become better.
