The Blood of the Rose plot

Together with her husband Alan, British-Kenyan Joan Root made a number of highly regarded natural history documentaries about the fauna and flora in Africa. In the last years of her life she devoted herself to nature conservation in Kenya, especially in the Lake Naivasha region, where she lived. But in January 2006, she was shot dead at home by intruders with AK-47s. Four men were arrested. One of them was David Chege, the leader of a "people's watch" that Root himself funded to combat the illegal fishing of Lake Naivasha. Root had many enemies, but who killed her? Was it the illegal fishermen? Was it her former loyal Lieutenant Chege (whom she had fired)? Was it one of her colonial neighbors with whom Root had been at odds for years? Like a detective story, the documentary explores the various possibilities, but at the same time the film offers us an insight into the difficult relationship of contemporary Africa with the Western world. Because perhaps the main culprit in this unsavory murder case was a flower: the Kenyan rose.
