Spiders (2013)

I was in the mood for a Monster Bug movie again, but I should have known better, because this really wasn't that great. The spiders looked terrible, especially the big ones. More monster than spider, and that doesn't work in a spider movie. The small ones were slightly better, but their movements looked quite fake too. It wasn't really scary either, let alone suspenseful, which caused frustration to rear its head more and more often.

I wasn't exactly thrilled by the acting performances or the plot either. So, all in all quite disappointing.

Pfff, this is really nothing... it doesn't get exciting anywhere and the acting is very bad too. The spiders are also depicted very fakely. Who watches this anyway? So my TV went off before it was even halfway through the movie.

I expected less from this, given the many half stars. It has a reasonably Godzilla-esque story, some pretty fun scenes now and then, and some razor-sharp humor thrown in for good measure (although it is a bit silly that Sweeney, who was 15/16 at the time, has to play a 12-year-old girl). It is obviously not *too* high-quality, but it is still quite entertaining and deliciously gory at times.

One of the things that makes spiders creepy is that the small ones crawl under and on everything. One moment they are visible, and the next they are gone. You do have that advantage with these giants of a spider; they can barely fit under or between anything. But they do spin an oversized web and have jaws and (apparently) razor-sharp legs to die for. Anyway, those can be destroyed too.
