Wives under Suspicion plot

"The looks that pass between man and wife... Hiding words they dare not say!"

Professor Shaw MacAllen kills his wife after learning she is cheating on him. Prosecutor Jim Stowell is assigned to the case and tries to get MacAllen convicted. During the trial, he notes that the behavior of his own wife, Lucy Stowell, matches the sneaky behavior of the murdered woman. When Jim follows his wife one night, he finds himself in the same shoes as MacAllen. He feels the urge to kill her. Will his suspicion also lead to murder?

Apparently a remake of The Kiss Before the Mirror by the same director from five years earlier. The premise is certainly interesting: a hard-nosed prosecutor (with an abacus on his desk with little skulls for every criminal he's put to the electric chair!) clashes with his conscience when he realizes that inside every person there might be a potential murderer. Warren William certainly has the looks for the role, but when his character needs to come across as lighthearted or emotional, his facial expressions are too limited, and because of that, I can't empathize with him or sympathize with his problems as I should. Gail Patrick is his beautiful wife, Ralph Morgan is moving as the perpetrator of a crime passionel, and the black maid Lillian Yarbo serves as the comic relief, but ultimately, William has to carry the film, and I find him too limited an actor to do so with verve. All in all, this is a refined and very talky B-movie in terms of both cast and running time, on which this famous director was unable to sufficiently put his stylish stamp.
