The Old Man and the Sea plot

An elderly fisherman, Santiago, sets out to find himself and catch something again after losing his only friend, a young Cuban boy. He hopes to catch something again—something he hasn't been able to do for over eighty days. After days of no luck, he catches a very large fish; before he can reel in this fish, the fish is preyed upon by a group of sharks. Santiago must then fight a great battle with the sharks, to the death...

A beautiful and simple story by Hemingway, somewhat simple and sentimental like much of his work. Perhaps that is why it is so strong. The essence remains intact, despite the somewhat simple and TV-movie-like film adaptation that has been adapted to the viewing audience - that's a bit of a shame, but on the other hand Quinn is almost perfect as the proud old man. Nice to see Patricia Clarkson come along in an early role, what a character actress that has become.

I realized a little late that this is the remake of the older version from 1958, starring Spencer Tracy. Just ordered it right away, I'm curious about the differences. I hope the scenes with the fish are worked out a bit better.

A film that, in my opinion, relies entirely on Anthony Quinn's acting. It may be said that he played his role with verve, but otherwise The Old Man and the Sea is a film that has not quite stood the test of time. Perhaps that is not to be expected from a television film, but still. It has a bit of clumsiness and that is best expressed by the slow pace and the constant switching back to that uninteresting couple on land who are supposedly worried about Santiago. It makes the film nowadays at times a bit unintentionally comical instead of impressive. That said, the movie certainly has its moments (particularly Santiago's run-ins with the sharks) and it's a joy to watch Quinn let off steam.

Still a title, with an actor in the most important role, that created a 'spark' in me, that the book also turned out to be by Ernest Hemingway was only a bonus for me on top of that. It turned out that all this certainly does not necessarily mean a great film.

The story may be clear about the old Santiago, not only is the old man worn and you can wonder if he has simply forgotten, he also means a certain disgrace to the village and one sees a sign of doom in his inability with fish to come home. The battle for which Santiago once again sails is not only against himself, but also against the outside world in order to silence it. And as known by the synopsis, it ends in a battle against itself and nature.

Now I haven't read the book so I obviously miss the background and what Hemingway possibly meant. Yet it is not difficult to recognize the image in which Santiago shows his resilience and experience, and finally shakes off the image of the worn-out old man. Yet it could also be interpreted as a battle with fate and old age, or a test by God and Santiago's faith. It is clear that the battle shown is steeped in symbolism, and in itself the battle of the old fisherman is occasionally quite interesting.

But to say that I did see a great movie, well no. To be honest, The Old Man And The See was only moderately interesting to me and I wonder what the book is like and what the movie version from '58 is like. But so far I'm not very excited about this. It's funny that the real son and daughter of Anthony Quinn were cast for the young Santiago and Santiago's daughter.
