Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, court painter to the Catholic majesties Charles IV and Maria Louisa of Spain, is a wealthy and respected man and rightly regarded as an important artist. His works adorn the palaces and galleries of the wealthiest families in Spain. But Goya is a man of the people and this presents him with a dilemma. The contradiction between loyalty to the king and the connection he feels with the people is an issue of increasing concern. He sees the intrigue, the ruthlessness of the ministers at the Spanish court and he feels that the French Revolution is also resonating in his country...
