After his stint with The Beatles, which fell apart in 1970, John Lennon settled in New York City with his wife Yoko Ono. Despite all sorts of struggles with the immigration service, he would continue to live there until his death. In this conventionally set-up documentary, close friends of Lennon look back on that period, including record producer Klaus Voormann, Elton John and last but not least widow Yoko Ono. The indestructible songs, often as demo or concert fragments, are of course always present. The New York years are divided into two episodes: initially Lennon makes a loud noise as a musician and activist, but after the birth of son Sean he withdraws from the publicity to devote himself to his duties as a family man. When he makes a comeback in 1980 with a new album and plans for a world tour, everything suddenly ends when Lennon is shot dead by a deranged young man near his apartment on Central Park.
