Well, I'm having a hard time getting through it.

The images of nature are beautiful and support this drama well.

I find the atmosphere of the film very gloomy.

What bothers me is that I don't find the characters sympathetic.

It remains difficult to put yourself in the shoes of people from the 19th century...

I do like literary films, but here the interpretation is really more aimed at the feeling than at the story. Which in itself of course makes it a more personal film. But it is rather busy, with few sympathetic characters. It all remained quite distant, so that it is only visually interesting. But if you do not have the film itself, you are there with your experimental approach. A well-deserved attempt, perhaps it will be a bit better one day.

Since Andrea Arnold made major cuts in both narrative and dialogue, this film adaptation of Emily Brontë's masterpiece is probably hard to follow if you haven't read the book. Cathy [Shannon Beer] and Heathcliff [Solomon Glave] begin their stormy relationship as children. After being effectively banished by Cathy's family, Heathcliff [James Howson] returns years later as a successful businessman, with tragic consequences. With a cinema verite style and drizzly, rainy locations, Arnold is a radical departure from the romantic Hollywood version starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier, but the amplification of the oppressive setting comes at the expense of the extraordinary romance that makes both the book and the masterful 1939 version so memorable.
