Nice film about Tony who is almost 10 while his parents are going through a divorce. Credibility is quickly thrown overboard. But the audience this film is aimed at will not easily be bothered by this. Despite the subject, the film has a light tone and is all fun and entertaining. A small 3.0 stars for this Dutch children's film.

I almost really liked this movie. I always appreciate it when a children's film doesn't even make an effort to appear too believable - no one believes that this is really how things work in the palace or at the ministry. The slightly surreal, with Annet Malherbe as the radiant center, really appealed to me.
But then... Tony wants to bring his parents back together, and that is of course not easy. Now I thought it was strange that the parents broke up so abruptly after nine years of seemingly perfect harmony, but whatever. If Tony had brought his parents back together the film might have been too sweet, but now I think it looks a bit like an extended PO Box 51 commercial. If your parents divorce, everything will be fine. As if a very hard and forced attempt is being made to attack a taboo that is not even that big of a taboo anymore.
So I found the ending quite disappointing. Furthermore, I did enjoy this film, which is why it has three stars.

9-year-old Tony [Faas Wijn] idolizes his father Gilles [Jeroen Spitzenberger], one of the best crane operators in the world. He was very proud when the Queen [Annet Malherbe] personally appointed his father as minister. That goes well for a while, until mother Sissy [Rifka Lodeizen] discovers that her husband is having an affair with his secretary [Anna Drijver]. Divorce troubles follow and Tony seeks help from the Queen in the hope that his parents will get back together. The title refers to Tony's 10th birthday, when his father gave him permission to operate the crane 'The Beast'. Absurd combination of childish comedy and divorce drama, written by Mieke de Jong, but mainly due to Kamp's unbalanced direction. Warning: Carlo Boszhard plays Tony's annoying teacher.
