Cold Rock, United States. Over the years, children have disappeared without a single clue or witness. Superstitious locals talk about 'the tall man', a legendary, mysterious figure who takes children who are never seen again. Julia Denning, a nurse in Cold Rock, doesn't believe in that legend. Until one night she wakes up with a creepy feeling. When she goes to her son's bedroom, she discovers that he has disappeared. She runs downstairs and is suddenly stiff: a large and dark figure stands in her doorway with her son David in his hands...

You can clearly see similarities between Martyrs and The Tall Man on a thematic level. However, the effect is completely different. The atmosphere is good. The desolate Cold Rock gives you the shivers and the mystery surrounding the Tall Man is also well presented. A little more tension might have done the film well in this section, but it never gets boring.
The twist that Biel himself is the culprit actually follows fairly quickly, which gives the film a dip and you also wonder how Laugier will get that last half hour full.
However, Laugier knows how to convert that feeling into something positive, because the film actually goes a step further and therefore also manages to finish strong. It manages to come out strong again with, just like in Martyrs, a kind of umbrella organization that pursues a "bigger" goal..
Maybe it won't end up being the kind of movie you hope for when you read the synopsis and halfway through the movie you're also wondering if Laugier isn't going the wrong way, but in the end he still manages to surprise you and has Laugier with the Tall Man yet another original film.

That you get a budget for such an outrageously stupid script. The opening titles were already amateurish and it didn't stop there. 'The Tall Man' is a messy and poorly directed mess and is based on a really sad scenario. I couldn't believe my eyes. In any case, stealing from the kids and giving them a better future with the ''better'' rich is of course already done with the animals, but that seriously brought myth of 'The Tall Man' around it about as hilarious.. bad.
