When the painter Gulley Jimson is released from prison, he learns that his wife has sold his paintings to support herself, which he gives as the reason for leaving her. Then he learns that Sir William Beeder is interested in his paintings, but when he arrives at his home it turns out that he is on vacation. Jimson decides to live in Beeder's house himself and practice his painting on the walls.
