A Dry White Season plot
Teacher Ben du Toit (Donald Sutherland) actually has very little knowledge of the apartheid regime in South Africa, under which he lives. When the son of his black gardener dies under strange circumstances, he sees the terrible deeds being committed by the justice system. Determined to help his gardener, Ben enlists attorney Ian Mackenzie (Marlon Brando) to charge the killer.

Impressive film about the racial discrimination in South Africa just before the release of Nelson Mandela.
Unfortunately, towards the end the film takes on the allure of an action thriller and what was clearly explained and boldly denounced in advance fades into the background.
Surprising to me remains the rather low IMDB score. It's not an isolated case. Is it possible that some people do not digest such a film very well, or do they agree with what Madame du Toit says to her husband: "You are a white person, so stick with it. Give the "kaffirs" the same privileges as we and they do exactly the same as we do with them now, even worse..."
Marlon Brando is outstanding again and although Sutherland is no Michael Caine, he still gives a good performance as the blissful bourgeois, ignorant of what is happening in "his" country and who moves on to a fierce battle for justice.

One of the better anti-apartheid films (together with Skin and the more famous Goodbye Bafana). I watched this one in one breath. A white teacher stands up for justice when his gardener's son, and then the gardener himself, are found dead in the torture chambers of the secret police after a rally for more rights that ends in violence. But this support is not appreciated by his own "kind". The repression not only affects the blacks but also stigmatizes the white families who want to help them. The film easily finds the right tone between drama and thriller. Not only Sutherland plays a more than correct role, also Prochnow in his umpteenth bad guy role that you will hate and the much too little known Mokae contribute to this nice and solid film. Also starring Marlon Brando and Susan Sarandon in smaller roles.

Film about the dramatic aftermath of the riots in Soweto in 1976. One of the better films about the barbaric apartheid regime. Donald Sutherland gives an excellent leading role and Marlon Brando is back in "Brando" form in an important supporting role.
