Hanele plot

Hanele grew up in a small Hasidic Jewish community in Ruthenia just after the First World War. Instead of waiting for the Messiah to come, she decides to embrace Zionism and leaves for the big city to prepare for departure to the Promised Land. Karel Kachyna immerses us in the Jewish environment of a small village in a pre-war part of Czechoslovakia, where the young Hanele (Lada Jelínková) tries to break away from the suffocating environment with all its Jewish rites and traditions. She wants to live and finally finds a man who has also broken away from religion. But breaking away from that environment also comes with a price.

An interesting film by Karel Kachyna, about a world that no longer exists. That part of Czechoslovakia, also called Subcarpathian Ruthenia, was part of Russia before the First World War and almost by chance ended up in the new Czech republic after that war. It was a melting pot of peoples: Little Russians, Poles, Germans and especially Jews. But Prague was far away and the Czechs hardly paid attention to it. In 1938 the area was occupied by Hungary, then by the Germans and finally after World War II by the Russians, who annexed it to Ukraine. The Jewish population had already been murdered for a long time.

But that's not what this movie is about. Now it is not a punishment to look at the beautiful Lada Jelínková (she has nice breasts), but not much happens in this film. A nice insight into Jewish life at the time.
