Beautiful film about a scandal surrounding a popular quiz show. Based on a true and compelling story set at the dawn of the television era. Well-crafted characters and some strong scenes. An excellent cast and of course nice to see Martin Scorsese in a small role (who immediately has the most important piece of text from the film: 'They just wanted to watch the money.')

Robert Redford at the wheel and Scorsese with a small role as an actor. It can sometimes turn out differently. A court movie like the John Grisham movies. Redford's style sometimes resembles Brian De Palma, although he falls just a little short. The story is interesting and the cast is good at times. Especially the 2 quiz candidates, but most of the attention goes to father Van Doren. However, Rob Morrow is a gray figure. The strength of the film lies in the story and the fact that the film leaves room for interpretation.

The verdict really says it all: 'Everyone wins. The viewers, the television makers, the sponsors, the candidates, .... Who did it harm?'

You gonna give him your ulcer? Let him grow up with his own ulcer!

Very decent film and also Redford's first and best if I see the reviews like that. I have to say that Tuturro and Fiennes are perfectly matched to the real character and that the build-up towards the elimination, consequences, and hearing can be called very calm. It never gets really exciting, but it certainly keeps you interested until the end. The film changes halfway to a smear campaign, later at the hearing the case grows into an oil slick where everyone wants to keep their hands off. The confession of Fiennes is nice, the fall that follows is justified, and also the conclusion that the producers and bosses get away with everything and the common people are the asshole

As said, nice and above all decent film, very young Ethan Hawke who passes by as a student, furthermore an authentic image in terms of TV, the experience and other details. Great film for once and it is understandable that at the time it was a contender for best film.
