Student Stefan Christoph goes to the countryside at the behest of his teacher to assist a doctor in his investigation into a series of strange events. Stefan sees this as a golden opportunity to ask for the hand of his beloved who lives nearby. However, things are going very differently than Stefan had in mind. Once he has arrived at his beloved, he is not welcomed with open arms. After violent words with one of the servants and the father of his beloved, he is removed from the country. On his way to Doctor Maitland, he encounters the unconscious Carla who he takes to the doctor. There he gradually finds out what is really going on here in the small village. The mythical Prester John has come to life to bring the way of true redemption. His way, however, is one in which salvation can be achieved through suffering. However, it is not the redemption that brings Prester John but only the suffering.
