That Anderson anyway.

What do you actually make of this? Costume films are not my thing, but it looks much smoother and more modern than many costume films. Steampunk influences can be found in the tiniest cracks but never fully emerge. Visually it is much hipper than a film like this normally dictates, but Anderson can't really get it to work either.

Also the cast is a super weird mixed bag. Under Jovovich you can't escape, but Mikkelsen and Waltz as bad guys ... a bit strange for a film of this caliber. No idea whether there is a large budget behind it, but Anderson's films always feel like a B-movie, even if it often looks expensive.

Anyway, it's entertaining. It's not good, but in itself it's cool to see an MI scene in this era. Especially cool that Anderson breaks those kind of boundaries. Furthermore, it all takes a little too long and as the end comes in sight the CG starts to falter, but at that moment it is already so wrong that it is barely noticeable.

Funny. Takes a little too long, setting doesn't interest me, sometimes so kitschy that it hurts, but entertaining does the trick.

2.5*

I had quite a lot of fun with it. It's pure pulp/camp and it never pretends to be anything else. If this movie took itself very seriously, it would be 10x nothing. So the very ironic, not really taking itself seriously tone is pleasant here. Some humor here and there. And of course a lot of over the top action. The Three Musketeers can mainly rely on an enormously filled cast with well-known heads. So many actors that not everyone gets his or her moment (especially actors like Ray Stevenson and Christoph Waltz you should give them a little more to do if you have them available). But in general it is mainly the cast that knows how to keep the attention.

Nothing fancy, but it knows what it is, and that's always important (and all the more fun).

Pastiche made in the atmosphere of Pirates of the Caribbean, a lot of "over the top" acting in a film that hangs between a costume film, fantasy and an adventure film with a considerable star cast.

The story is wafer thin and mainly serves as a vehicle for a lot of spectacle, the exhausted musketeers are challenged by a (not very convincing) young d'Artagnan to fight again for love and justice. The dialogues are moderate to reasonable, and that Mila Jovovich comes out the best is telling. the CGI is very nice, lots of nice pictures.

Very entertaining to watch with the children, but they dropped out of the forced love scenes that also had to be included to lure some women to the cinema.

Nothing special, nice for in between.
