"Atlantis is waiting..."
1914: Milo Tatch believes he has found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric millionaire gives Milo a crew so he can test his theory. When they find Atlantis, it appears that the culture is slowly dying out, because the inhabitants can no longer read their ancient writings, which describe their mysterious power source.

When revised, however, increased in votes. Maybe I'm the only one, but I think this Disney is the animation where they've come closest to Ghibli. Beautiful animation and spirited characters with a humor that is also known in The Emperor's Groove. It is an adventure film with more violence than in the other Disney films. No songs here either and Kida is an alternative 'princess'. In comparison with the Ghibli films, too little fantasy, but nevertheless a film with a lot of humor and exciting scenes. One of the better Disney movies.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is the 41st full-length animated cartoon from Disney. This film was again directed by the duo Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, who were previously responsible for Beauty and the Beast and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Atlantis: The Lost Empire, however, is nowhere near reaching that level.
The film is based on the legends surrounding the sunken continent of Atlantis and is heavily influenced by the work of Jules Verne. The animation style is quite angular and the use of color is also very dull. However, the backgrounds look phenomenal again and thanks to the use of the computer we see the necessary delights in the field of animation. The story is quite entertaining, but nowhere do you feel like you are watching a Disney movie. The formula of music and songs, with which Disney had huge success in the 90s, has been dropped for an action-adventure, especially reminiscent of films like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Star Wars. However, the reviews were anything but positive and partly because of this, the film was not a big box-office success.
This makes Atlantis: The Lost Empire a failed experiment.

Reasonable Disney film, with an adventure story that a little Woland would certainly have enjoyed. Lost civilizations, voyages of discovery, archaeological discoveries and adventure, what more could you want? The supernatural aspect was not necessary for me and it did feel a bit like an easy deus ex machina, but well, that wasn't the worst. The childish tone was already a bit more annoying, but forgivable considering the target group.
Despite the above potential, there were also some significant drawbacks. I wasn't exactly impressed with the animation, especially in the beginning I was shocked by how bad the animations are in particular. It often felt a bit like I was watching a 90's game. And I couldn't do much with the collected bunch of boring caricatures that made up the expedition. It never felt like a whole, you never got much affinity with the wafer-thin characters, and Milo himself remained a somewhat bland, cardboard figure. It's a bit different from the usual Disney movie, yes, and the story certainly attracted me, but in the end it feels a bit like a missed opportunity.
