Let Him Be plot

Let Him Be is a film about two film students (Tim Bennett and Kathleen Joyce) who discover a long-dead rock icon in a remote part of Canada. It all starts when Tim discovers a tape in an old video camera that his father gave him. The tape has a clip of an old man playing the guitar. The man in the video is older now but the resemblance to John Lennon is striking. Could it be him?

A conspiracy theory arose around The Beatles in the 1960s that Paul McCartney had died and been replaced by a talented doppelganger. This film taps into another, less familiar theme: what if Lennon is still alive? The found footage approach works very well for this film. Although it's not completely taken to extremes, as in some scenes the camerawoman is filmed (by whom?). That's probably for aesthetic reasons. The acting is reasonably convincing. The setting is beautiful in Canada. Hessy's Music Shop is a nod to Hessy's in Liverpool, where The Beatles bought their guitars back in the day.

The music is delivered so well that it could easily be new Lennon music: it got under my skin. For me, this is definitely one of the more successful found-footage movies. It also helps if you like the Beatles.

I'm also bringing this to the attention of Brix in case this one slipped under his radar.
