Yi Ye Taibei plot

Au Revoir Taipei follows a lovesick Kay on a night when he tries to contact his great love who has gone to study in Paris. It all starts when Kai takes his girlfriend to the airport. Everyone knows this goodbye is for good, except Kai. He begins learning French at a local library in hopes of salvaging his relationship and growing old happily together. He even sends messages in French, clearly ignored by his 'girlfriend', to show how much he is willing to pay for their relationship. After an extraordinary night, the romance he had been looking for all along turns out to be there...

Nice movie.

The first production of Atom Cinema and it was an instant hit. It won awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Deauville Asian Film Festival and the San Francisco Asian American International Film Festival.

Arvin Chen captures a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere of Taipei on film. Small streets, eateries, neon lights and here and there a skyline. The jazzy soundtrack is nice to listen to and fits very well with a number of scenes.

Amber Kuo as Susie acts very nicely. Jack Yao also does a nice job. Lawrence Ko as Hong is funny at times. Joseph Chang had a slightly lesser role, but also did not speak very much. The rest of the cast also does a nice job.

4.0*

A colorful mix of comedy, romance and crime. The film fails to captivate and also has quite a few loose ends. Amber Kuo does not do badly, but the rest of the cast fails to convince. The excuse may perhaps be that the story is rather ramshackle. Apart from a number of atmospheric images very mediocre.

Kai experiences a crazy night in Taipei. A night that is a series of crazy events. Kai has to defend himself against wannabe gangsters dressed in bright orange. Kai is chased by an idiotic police officer with a broken heart. Kai's best friend is kidnapped. And Kai meets Susie. In between, he has to show his face in his parents' diner every now and then. Yi Ye Taibei is a fun hectic night in Taipei.
The paths of remarkable characters cross during this night. None of the characters are literally and/or figuratively where they would like to be, but they do their best to get there. For example, Kai wants to go to Paris but has no money. The police officer wants to do something about his heartbreak, but he is on duty. And everyone has wishes that they try to realize, with the outcome not always being as desired. Sometimes things don't work out. Sometimes things do work out, but are disappointing. The behavior of the characters and their mutual interactions provide dynamism and pace and are very entertaining.
Director and writer Arvin Chen, who grew up in the United States and returned to Taiwan as an adult, has made a fine feature film debut with Yi Ye Taibei. The film is an ode to Taipei. An ode to the romance of Taipei at night. The events in the film are accompanied by swinging jazz that fits in well with the colorful, bizarre, comic and romantic content of the story. Yi Ye Taibei is an entertaining ode.
