Danny (Statham) is an ex-mercenary who finds himself in serious trouble when Hunter (De Niro), his best friend and mentor, is kidnapped at the behest of an Arab sheik. The latter forces Danny to commit murder. If he doesn't, Hunter will die an unquestionably painful and tragic death.

Such a wonderful action film, and yet a rather low average. Even the presence of De Niro brings no extra credit for a change.
The action is good, the story is cool and there are a lot of good actors in it. That's really all you need for a successful action movie. In principle I could leave it at that, as far as the review is concerned. There are many things I would like to point out. Even considered giving 4.5*, because there is enough momentum in the film. Killer Elite really benefits from having multiple parties involved. It's also not exactly good vs. bad. Of course you have a lot of sympathy for Statham, but secretly I like Clive Owen in this role. Dominic Purcell is doing surprisingly well! I only remember him as the boring turd from Prison Break.
The spectacle, of course, revolves around Statham. Maybe not his coolest role, but it's nice that he and not De Niro don't have the lead role. De Niro plays a fairly natural role here. Sometimes good. I also like that it takes place in the eighties. Big bad mustaches and especially some more stylish cars. Even with the less modern equipment, this adventure has a little more charm than when everyone has cell phones. Again, great adventure. Deserves more credit in my opinion.

Very good action movie with Jason Statham and Robert De Niro, who I had never seen together in a movie before. Statham plays at his usual level but De Niro seemed very natural to me. This movie exceeded my expectations as it is better than the average Statham movie. A good story, based on a book based on a true story.

A movie with Statham and "based on a true story". Should you take this a little more seriously than other Statham films? Marketing trick: this is just your average action movie with all the clichés on it, ranging from foreign interference in a forgotten war to an annoying romance between Statham and a blond hottie. Not really good, but for those who can't get enough of Statham or dime a dozen action licks, this is another one to add to the list. What will stay with me most is the presence of De Niro. :O
