"To confront the truth, first they had to face each other."
Bill (Michael Sheen) and Kate (Maria Bello) are a married couple who are about to file for divorce. Then they hear the news that their 18-year-old son Sam is responsible for a major shooting at his school after which he has taken his own life.

Michael Sheen is always in great films (Frost/Nixon, The Damned United, The Queen...) and once again this "Beautiful Boy" is a pretty good film, not least because of the convincing acting of Sheen and his co-star Maria Bello .
And yet the film lacks something to be great, despite the appealing character (it is difficult to make a bad film with it). I got the impression that the film got stuck in the middle, certain aspects of the plot were repeated and the film therefore had several dead moments.

A film about the parents of a boy who committed a massacre at university and then killed himself. The film is about how parents should deal with this. This is of course a very moving story that almost automatically makes you a film. At least that's what you would think. But it turns out to be an enormous challenge to make a good and fascinating film out of it. And you notice that in this film. The film is mainly about how sorry the parents are and how they just can't understand it. That's all believable at first, but at a certain point the film gets stuck there and you've seen it all. Of course it's a lot of misery that happens to you, but a film has to go somewhere. And unfortunately that doesn't happen enough here. At the end of the film you as a viewer have still not progressed much. Possibly also because this involves a processing process that takes many years and the film only covers a relatively short timeframe.
