Brian De Palma has also made a lot of mediocrity.

Wise Guys is an enjoyable film, but the humor is sometimes far too thin and predictable (see, for example, the car bomb). The best part was the parodies of other mafia films. That seems to me the only reason this was made.

2.5*

A mediocre gangster comedy filled with the usual stereotypes. A reasonably entertaining, but also predictable story. A few good jokes, but it's a shame it often becomes rather chaotic. And the overpowering music only adds to that.

Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo prove to be a solid comedic duo in this reasonably amusing parody of mafia films. They play two errand boys for a Newark mob boss (Dan Hedaya).

When gambling addict DeVito causes Hedaya to lose a fortune at the horse races, Hedaya decides that simply eliminating them isn't enough. Instead, he decides to test their loyalty by ordering them to kill each other.

This sets in motion a series of wacky comedic adventures, which are definitely not the "almost complete failure" this viewer was led to believe. Admittedly, some jokes and gags work better than others, but director Brian De Palma certainly knows how to handle serious crime or mafia films, and he demonstrates a keen sense for this comedic approach to such stories.

The screenplay, written by George Gallo (who scored a huge hit two years later with his script for Midnight Run (Film, 1988), takes full advantage of the chemistry between the two leads. De Palma had seen them in the 1984 mafia parody Johnny Dangerously (Film, 1984) and laughed so hard that he wanted to use them in this film. They are surrounded by a top-notch cast: Harvey Keitel, Ray Sharkey, Patti LuPone, Julie Bovasso, Frank Vincent, etc. Wrestler Captain Lou Albano goes hilariously over the top as the psychotic muscle man Frank "The Fixer" Acavano.

Watch this film yourself, and you'll see it's definitely capable of providing a few laughs. It's energetic and well-paced, clocking in at only 92 minutes, and offers a satisfying resolution.

This film scores a nice 7 with us.
