Moderate.

Without a doubt a film that has its fanbase, but nevertheless not a great film for me. I understand why this film is embraced though. There are quite a few elements in it that sound like music to the ears of some fans. The amount of ideas this film contains is therefore not really my point of criticism. I even encourage it.

The sad thing is that this film takes so long to get the story going. I understand that you want to introduce the characters this way, but not much is done to give these characters a face. Lots of jokes, lots of teasing, but little progress and that makes the film a bit boring and tiring to get through early on.

Visually there is certainly some budget in it, which is mainly invested in the location and also some nice practical effects. There are parts in this film that you can lick your fingers at. The mediocre acting of a well-known cast is therefore quickly forgiven. The pity is that even when the horror kicks in there is little speed, which makes the film not much less tiring after 30 minutes.

The many surrealistic events in between keep the film watchable, because there is little else to experience during this film. However, I wanted to give it a 2.5* if the finale could still show something. However, the opposite happened: the finale was quite cheesy. The monster looked awful, leaving the viewer with a very disappointing pay-off.

Overall it's not terrible, there are good ideas and the makers wanted to go wild, but the film is still too slow to remain entertaining at all times. Too little happens for too long and the strange path the film takes can compensate for that. However, it is the finale itself that makes the film land on a lower score. Too bad.

Watched it today on Blu-ray, but thought it was a mediocre film, very slow.

The film starts off very quietly with some lame jokes between each other and someone who encounters an abandoned Russian ship underwater, only after about 45 minutes we see the first infection and soon more infections on people follow and later we also see the Alien-like creatures, from then on it gets a bit better, but I found there to be very little action in it.

Many familiar faces and it's a surprise who survives, once at the top we see something ''big'' appear, but all in all I expected more,

But maybe I'm used to movies like ''Deep Rising'' full of action, but since this one comes from the late 80s this wasn't the case then, no I prefer Deep Rising (Film, 1998).
