In eight chapters the different facets of 'the American way of thinking' are told. On racial and religious tolerance to the dangers of egocentrism and shortsightedness. The eight stories represent a broad cross-section of American thought. Among the speakers are an old widow, whose pride has been damaged because she no longer counts, and a Texas mother, who has to deal with the consequences of racism when she wants to meet the boyfriend of her son who died in the war. The titles of the chapters are: 1. 'Interruptions, Interruptions'; 2. 'Census Taker'; 3. 'Negro Story'; 4. 'Rosika, the Rose'; 5. 'Letter from Korea'; 6. 'Lone Star'; 7. 'Minister in Washington' and '8. Four Eyes'.
