Down Terrace plot

"You're only as good as the people you know."

Down Terrace tells the story of father and son, Bill and Karl, two petty criminals. They have just been released from prison, where they have been serving an undisclosed crime. They are convinced that they have been betrayed. Once back in their hometown of Brighton, they stage a revenge campaign. That seems easier than it is, especially when Karl's girlfriend suddenly shows up heavily pregnant and points to him as the father of the child. And then things don't go smoothly in the family atmosphere either.

Ben Wheatley, I don't quite know what to think of his oeuvre yet. A Field in England and Kill List were both intriguing but often too out-there to really enjoy, I thought Sightseers was a very nice watch, so I actually expected that this Down Terrace would at least suit me somewhat. But that was quite disappointing.

In Down Terrace it is an hour and a half of watching father and son Bill and Karl, petty criminals who have just gotten out of prison, and who spend the entire film chatting away in their dilapidated house. Old acquaintances from the world regularly come by, they try to find out who ratted them out, occasionally someone is killed, but it's a bit like watching paint dry. I'm fine with British humor in general, and ditto for social dramas, but this is lacking on all levels. Hopeless harries with hopeless conversations, unconvincing clumsy criminals, uninteresting drama and, despite a reasonable body count, little tension. Every now and then it's still funny to see how everything and everyone is being ruined, but that's about it. And since we see the same British 70s apartment for almost the entire film, it is not that visually exciting. The first time Wheatley really disappoints me.

Black humor in this dryly funny English crime drama about father Bill and son Karl, two petty criminals who have just come out of prison and soon start looking for the traitor in their area. The first hour in particular is strong, with wonderfully understated dialogue and slightly absurd situations. Towards the end the film loses focus and things become a bit too unbelievable and thick. Nevertheless, a fine debut from director Ben Wheatley.

Completely uninteresting feature film debut from director Ben Wheatley, who mainly introduces many characters but never justifies their right to exist. I don't think I've ever seen such a boring movie, there really wasn't a single scene that even remotely drew me to the screen. The main problem is that the figures are anything but interesting. They ramble on about anything and everything, but I didn't see why I should care at all. Wheatley's nervous and bald direction does not make the presentation any better, everything looks quickly put together and ghastly. Only the acting is very reasonable, but if even Michael Smiley cannot provide an interesting angle, it will quickly come to nothing. The story must have been cleverly conceived, but it really didn't interest me at all. In the past I have had to make an effort to sit through a film, but Down Terrace was really close to impossible.
