The film is set around a small village around the Sava River between 1912, during the First Balkan War against the Turks, and 1914, the start of the First World War at the time of the crucial Battle of Cer, the first Allied victory. The central theme is a love triangle between the agent Dorde, his wife Katrina and Katrina's ex-lover, the veteran Gavrilo, who has lost an arm in a previous war, and with it also part of his sense of life. Despite the fact that Katarina is now married to Dorde, she still has feelings for Gavrilo, which causes friction between them. When all the soldiers are sent to the front, there are rumors that the crippled soldiers left behind are taking advantage of this and seducing the women. When this rumor reaches the front, the army staff fears that the soldiers will desert and return. They decide to send all the crippled soldiers to the front as well.
