Fallen Angel plot

"The creator of "Laura" does it again!"

Poor and itinerant Eric Stanton is kicked off the bus at night at a small town because he cannot afford the fare. Eric manages to arrange some food at the local coffee shop 'Pop Eats' and there he meets the attractive, but also unruly waitress Stella. Eric falls in love with Stella and visits 'Pop Eats' regularly. But cop Mark Judd seems to be having more success with Stella. Stella doesn't like Eric and he thinks she will love him when he has enough money. Eric therefore makes love to the naive mayor's daughter June Mills and he then marries her for her money. One day Stella is found murdered and Eric is the prime suspect. Even though June has learned about Eric's motives for marrying her, she still loves him and helps him find the real killer of Stella.

Nice film in which a man who ends up in a small town falls in love with the waitress in a cafe. The characters of this film noir serve the plot a little too much, which makes them seem a bit forced. Even though the film hasn't quite stood the test of time, it remains quite entertaining. A narrow 3.0 stars.

I had read that Faye was angry because many of her scenes were cut for Darnell's benefit, but overall they both had a balanced role in the film, which works in the film's favor. I also find it a bit poignant that Faye blew up her own career for this.

Whatever, it is a classic noir where everyone is willing to share their lives with their greatest love, whom they met fifteen minutes earlier. What I liked here is that the femme fatale Darnell is not as outright evil as her peers, just a bit opportunistic. Andrews plays a little less here in my opinion. I thought it was a shame that John Carradine wasn't there a little longer as professor, he was cool.

Very atmospheric noir made by largely the same team that created Laura the year before. The story of attraction and repulsion of the sexes takes place in a sleepy American town with the local bar and the house of the Christian conservative Alice Faye as central antipodes, which represent evil and good respectively. Dana Andrews as an anti-hero without a penny in his pocket positions himself morally between these two points, with Linda Darnell as a femme fatale offending the men by simply being herself as a waitress in the pub, and this opposite the virtuous Alice Faye who has not seen anything of life yet. The character of Dana Andrews is immediately revealed to the viewer at the intro by the way he gets on board with John Carradine as Professor Madley. Good performances from those involved, including Charles Bickford as the retired cop, nicely spiced with hard-boiled dialogues. Only the supporting roles often overact.

Dynamic direction and beautifully shot images with perfect chiaroscuro lighting by Otto Preminger and Joseph LaShelle respectively. That visual b&w splendor cannot be emphasized enough as far as I'm concerned. Furthermore, I cannot help but feel that in addition to Laura, this is also a film that must have inspired David Lynch for his Twin Peaks series: sleepy town with characterful inhabitants where things happen that avoid daylight, and then each time that entrance into the local pub where natives meet for a damn fine cup of coffee.

A film with a good screenplay that put me on the wrong track for a while. However, you have to take into account that relationships according to the Hollywood script of the time are quite impulsive, such as the fact that people get married here barely a week after meeting. The title of the film is further explained in a particularly poetic way. Good.
