German war veteran Wilhelm Grimm returns to his birthplace on the German-Polish border. He resumes his pre-war teaching job. But the further time passes, the more bitter and cynical Grimm becomes. Grimm reflects on his grim past. In flashbacks, we see that Grimm can remember raping a young student after his betrothed left him. He was then banished from his village by the residents. Grimm is attracted to National Socialism and joins the Gestapo. After rising to the rank of a murderous Gestapo commander, he returns to his hometown. After World War II, Grimm has to appear before the Nuremberg Tribunal.
