Photographer Gerard Petrus Fieret often edited his photos, which mostly date from the 1960s, in a way that would horrify other photographers or collectors. He was careless with chemicals, left wet photos to dry, glued together, and put name stamps in crucial places. In this portrait, Frank van den Engel goes in search of the world that is hidden behind this exceptional and eccentric talent. He speaks with colleagues and former models and with collectors and visits the photographer in his totally neglected and dilapidated house. Fieret turns out to be a somewhat confused and suspicious old man with a savage beard, at first sight a vagabond for whom existence has little value anymore. But gradually the tragic and fascinating story unfolds of an artist who is only understood and appreciated when it is too late for him.
