'The Experiment' follows 26 men who are chosen to participate in a psychological game where they are divided into guards and prisoners. In the beginning everything seems to be going well, but the relationship between the two groups is becoming increasingly drastic. Remake of 'Das Experiment' by Oliver Hirschbiegel.

Not seen original yet.

Haven't seen the German original yet, I know I should have started with that, but I still preferred the remake that's on Netflix. Ultimately, I'm pretty sure this is a softer version of the original.

It started off quite disturbing, but that is also because real images of, for example, animal slaughter are shown. That then clashes with the rest of the film, because the rest of the film remains very soft on violence.

I didn't really believe the movie either. It's supposed to have to do with "human nature" but I just found Whitaker's character so bizarre that I thought it was more of his craziness that made it this far.

Most of the characters are also "types". You soon see who is going to be a guard and who is going to be prisoners. I don't know anyone who behaves this strangely, even outside of the experiment. Whitaker in full, because despite the fact that he doesn't play bad, his character just doesn't fit in here.

For the rest, the cinematography also fails. You simply don't feel the harshness and filth and it feels more like a reality series. Something you can imagine in this, but it comes at the expense of the hardness of the film.

For the rest fine acting, yes, but no charm and no impact. The film does look nice, but I saw this more as a film that entertains rather than as a film that should shock and realize. And that's exactly what you should prevent as a director.

It's been a while since I last saw the German version. Differences here and there with this American remake. The original was still stronger, but weaker towards the end when the pendulum swung too much to a slasher level.

The Stanford experiment is notorious and thought provoking when one gains power over subordinates. Always interesting to draw conclusions from. To get optimal results, all factors and parameters have to be right. Unfortunately this is not the case here. The "money" factor is too strong and influences the thinking of the participants too much. The thought that a broken rule or the fact that someone gives up the (accumulated!) compensation for everyone (!) is canceled is too impressionable to be able to act spontaneously. And you can see that clearly in the film.

The switch to the urination incident is also quite abrupt and does not come across as truthful, the same with the diabetes patient by the way. On the other hand, you can see that the boundaries are constantly being pushed back. One leader who is followed, one person who finally feels appreciated and sets himself up as a leader, because his life is otherwise a failure. The guards take their role seriously and hide behind the rules, the prisoners make a game of it and realize too late that there is no turning back. Where was the medical team by the way?

There are, of course, some minor flaws that I saw better developed in the German version (I thought). Nevertheless, an interesting experiment that makes you think about how humans are (can) be put together.

You still think we're higher on the evolutionary chain than monkeys?

Mainly tried because I liked the German version, and although the film has a decent duo in Brody and Whitaker, and the film has a reasonable ending, this remake is quite redundant and the level of the German version is not reached anywhere.

Where Brody is on the dull side in the beginning, he improves strongly towards the climax, Whitaker can be called great anyway as a man who can't handle power and suffers from projection I suspect. Speaking of power, irritation and bullying are where people are, no power is needed for that. In terms of suspense, it is especially the second half where the characters really cross swords and things start to get out of hand while the beginning feels bland. Moreover, in German version this is given a little more skeleton with a main character who is a reporter and someone else I believe is an undercover police officer.

The A Clockwork Orange moment in which Piet Paulusma seems to appear is special, beautiful the presence of the beautiful Maggie Grace, less the character of Brody who is designated as leader by the guards, gets things going towards the end but actually nowhere comes across as a leader. The diabetic who thinks he can do without insulin is downright stupid, sure!

It makes The Experiment a not really special and above all superfluous film, were it not for the fact that the climax still does reasonably well and the film somewhat saves. But it's not enough for a good grade.
