Businessman Arnold Boult (Tracy) wants to make his son Edward a success, despite all the costs. He deliberately sets fire to, causes two suicides, steals and bribes people. His wife (Kerr) becomes addicted to alcohol and dies. His son, despite all he has done for him, remains ungrateful and eventually commits suicide. After Arnold is in prison for his crimes, he goes in search of his fake grandson.
