Deluge plot

The North American coast is ravaged by a number of tidal waves. When the tidal waves reach New York and engulf the city, Martin becomes separated from his wife and children. Seemingly the only survivors, Martin meets Claire and they comfort each other during this difficult time. Later, more people appear to have survived the disaster and they try to rebuild a city together. During this process, Martin's wife turns out to be still alive. Claire, however, thinks she can no longer live without Martin, now that they have been through so much together.

The inevitable special effects such as when skyscrapers are hit by tidal waves

swallowed up, may be a joke but it is a film from 1933, and one has

clearly tried their best to make something of it. The mention of science fiction seems to me

doubtful, because it is mainly a disaster and ultimately a drama film. With a good story that

is kept attractively going by various developments and good acting.

I actually found Claire significantly less sympathetic at the end, but it was a turnaround

who also had to deal with despair and disappointment, which is also evident from the final scene, actually

the same way she fled from the brute who wanted to appropriate her, and

also a nice detail. A very nice and charming film indeed.

Where a modern disaster film starts in the lowest gear (the disaster announces itself, the hero sees the signs, nobody believes him, the first accidents are not yet linked to each other... – for convenience I'll quote myself from Moonfall, then watching that stupid film would have been good for something) this primeval film immediately starts in medias res, which may have been a bit of a breath-taking experience for the 1933 audience. As was indeed to be expected, the modeling is mediocre, but the smaller-scale moments (the collapsing interior of the house) are still reasonably effective, and the wilderness in which Martin wakes up is even distinctly depressing. The rest of the film is also pleasantly unsentimental (witness the way the gang treats their female prisoner), so the tension is maintained during the second half of the film, although Sidney Blackmer is not such a strong hero. Moreover, it is a pity that the plot ends so conventionally and full of community spirit and that the "eternal triangle" remains so important, although the very last scene is still compelling. All in all, this is still a pretty strong film that belies its age quite well.
