Schemer plot

"Inspired by the murder of Maja Bradaric"

Six high school friends are inseparable throughout a sweltering summer. They go out together, hang out in the floodplains and call each other a lot. They all have their own problems and insecurities, which they project onto the others. Mutual jealousy, crushes, incomprehension and gossip lead to the group turning increasingly away from one of the girls. The peer pressure means that minor irritations towards her are magnified - disproportionately - and turn into envy. Eventually, tensions run so high that the group derails and plans to kill the girl. Inspired by the murder of the Nijmegen Maja Bradari? in 2003.

Again a Dutch misper of size. Kind of Elephant wannabe, and then also a very mediocre one. The group dynamics come across as hilariously unreal and the cast is of GTST caliber. They all fail to provide their characters with the necessary credibility. That Caesar as exponent. Audiovisual across the board is also very poor, although something of a grim atmosphere creeps in during the last half hour. For that 1.5*, for the rest it never rises above the teletubbie level.

Twilight

Schemer's premise is quite interesting, but as so often, that's not enough for a good movie. The acting is once again very bad (only Van De Sande Bakhuyzen is good), the dialogues feel unnatural, and the story structure (we always follow one character) contributes little and is rather confusing.

Schemer's best scenes are therefore the ones in which Smitsman doesn't mess around with the story structure, but the scenes in which he points the camera at the actors, builds up the scene slowly, and slowly increases the tension. The wordless scene with different characters in the car, where you know what's coming, is class. Unfortunately, there are too few such scenes, and Schemer is otherwise a fragmentary film with poorly developed characters, strange directing and script choices, and a murder plot that really makes no sense (the decision for murder[/spoiler ] is briefly explained in two short scenes).

Good Dutch thrillers, you hope to find them anyway, and I've wanted to see this title in that context for quite some time. An early role by the big breakthrough Gaite Jansen, just after Carry Slee, and in addition at least three household names that appear more often in Dutch mainstream productions (Van de Sande Bakhuyzen, De Hoog, Klaver). Relevant, because we follow a group of six friends and every role matters considerably.

Schemer has a fierce and daring premise, not only because director Smitsman and screenwriter Daanje go on the Laura Palmer tour, but also because you have to credibly tell young adult actors an ice-cold (com)plot. let play out. That is impossible or difficult without characters with psychopathic traits and/or fetishes, the source material gives in, and then the cast splits in increased coolness and the doubting behavior of the accomplices. In De Hoog and van de Sande Bakhuyzen I especially missed the belief that they could keep their deed upright in this way (the film adaptation of the aftermath is full of contradictions, from regret to coldness), an actor like Oratmangoen looks really clumsy as a pouting third and I also don't think he knew how to keep his character in line. Especially as a drama, the film is so woefully unbalanced. What promises a lot on paper, and remains fascinating for a long time due to the perspective-rich narrative structure, collapses like a house of cards due to the predominantly weak interpretations and the unstable last act.
