What starts as an idyllic film about the ideal childhood friendship between David and Emily, takes a gloomy and uncomfortable turn in the second half. It is no longer just about friendship, but also about jealousy, selfishness and damaged self-esteem . Harper finishes it off with a big uppercut that didn't leave me unmoved. To make you silent. Turgoose with his overly serious look does well; the droopy content is rather exaggerated, but anyway, the content lends itself to it. Good emotional soundtrack by Noah & the Whales. The lyrics fit the story well.

Always beautiful, childhood sweethearts.

The Scouting Book for Boys revolves around David and Emily, the only peers at a caravan camp on the gray English coast. This duo is made for each other, they are rebellious, manifest themselves among the grown-ups and everything seems carefree. But that soon comes to an end when Emily has to go live with her father and she simply runs away.

What else can you say about it? Ultimately David is the only one who knows her hiding place and the actual reason she fled is the fact that her stepfather had been quite perverted in the past. Gossip and rumors spread and it ultimately drives David and his trust in the once beloved childhood friend. With a quite painful and harrowing outcome.

Quite a nice job. Albeit indeed. But the ending is a hammer blow.

3.5*
