Reasonable film about two completely different sisters who don't really get along. The two sisters and the dysfunctional family are well portrayed (it takes a while before the direction of the film is clear). Sometimes portrayed a bit idiosyncratically and perhaps because of this also a bit distant.

Unmistakably a Jane Campion (the lavish floral wallpaper), but now with a John Waters-esque vibe, in the sense that everyone is acting a little crazy. I share Campion's fascination for the self-absorbed, taciturn person/woman, living in a fantasy world, a type of character she portrayed so beautifully in films such as An Angel at my Table and The Piano. In this case it revolves around the introverted, superstitious Kay who is afraid of trees. Perhaps her tree phobia symbolizes the fear of the roots of a large, close-knit family, something she does not have because the family she is part of is dysfunctional and anything but normal. Her sister 'Sweetie' suffers from a mental illness and is exactly what Kay is not: extroverted, exuberant .. A wonderful role by Genevieve Lemon, in her cute eighties outfit (would just be very hip now, the film looks younger anyway). Sweetie has the character traits that Kay would have liked to have, which may be why she always reacts so angrily to her sister. The family also doesn't know how to deal with Sweetie at all; the one time she gets a scolding, then they are very accommodating again, sometimes they even make fun of her.

The scene with the tree house came right in; Kay's fear of trees tragically comes true here. I found the part that Sweetie imitates her sister (It's not very fair Dawn!) very apt, because it portrays their different characters so beautifully and that Sweetie is actually much freer than Kay.

Kay's husband is a really good sweetheart, as every man should be, in fact. "It is spiritual not to have sex, after all, the Dalai Lama does not have sex either."

Haha....

Not her debut film, but still one of the films with which she gained early fame. A tragicomedy about a rather dysfunctional family. I had something to do with Louis. At the start it seemed to be a player, but it didn't become much more than a dry sof. Quite submissive and accommodating to the whims and bizarre behavior of his in-laws.

Sweetie stands out, of course. Sweetie is not the lead protaganist, but his sister. Funny and tragic at the same time was the moment when she was left behind by the family and was not allowed to go on a trip. Her attitude in the tree at the end was also amusing (if not tragic).

Kay is also special, a beautiful girl to be sure, but her phobia of trees and her strict attitude to abstain from sex didn't make things any easier for her partner Louis.
