Crazy Heart plot

"The harder the life, the sweeter the song."

Once one of the greatest performers and inspiring generations of country singers, today Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) is just a shadow of himself. His life is played out between concert halls and cheap motels and he tries, in vain and without passion, to convey his old success to the last fans who still come to his performances. When his path crosses that of Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a young local journalist, Bad rediscovers the taste of life. But he must lay claim to what is most dear to him, his music, to avoid being overtaken by his old demons: alcohol and self-destruction.

setback. It's mainly that the whole movie is so middle of the road and dime a dozen. A bit of country music, nice music from the American interior and some bars and bowling alleys where time seems to have stood still. People seem to rely too much on the atmosphere that comes from it without adding anything or doing anything original, and so it is sometimes a very dull film. And then the poorly written role of Bridges, of course on alcohol and a life of failure behind him. It's that there are some small nuances that make the film just that little bit different. That role of Farell is very nice and nice to see that he is just trying to help Bridges and not the arrogant student. And Bridges himself does his best by not being an asshole at all, something that one quickly falls into with this type of role. This is just someone where it all went wrong. Besides that he's just convincing with his sighs and puffs. But yes, in a much too typical role. 2.5*.

Been drunk most of my life, lost a hell of a lot...

More than fine drama, which disappointed me the first time, and the second time it doesn't touch me, but it does fascinate me.

The main focus seems to be the willingness and ability to change after making many mistakes. Blake has especially lost confidence in himself after a life full of bad choices, Jean has especially lost confidence in men after many bad choices. Something that triggers an attraction-repel reaction and awakens both the worst and the best in each other. The interaction between the two is interesting, especially when things seem to go wrong and a choice moment comes, further down the rabbit hole or awareness...? In the end, with the country setting in the background, the film mainly revolves around getting a second chance, in this case not even necessarily for someone or to keep someone in your life, but for yourself, to finally look in the mirror and to be honest with yourself. The interaction between Jean and Blake is fascinating, but the scenes with Buddy are also precious, except for the missing person. Bridges is almost self-evidently strong in such a run-down, ill-mannered, snide role, Oscar rightly so I thought. Farrell not in the picture much but in his place as the too slick and made star.

Crazy Heart is a charming drama about the mess that a person can make, change is nevertheless always an option as it turns out, there is always a second chance. In the background are things like an addiction and the sometimes moribund existence of some artists who, by their own actions or managers, lead a dog's life in such a way. Crazy Heart is therefore a hard but honest drama with a glimmer of hope ... because it is never too late.

Beautiful.

Very standard story. It's not a biopic but it could have been one of those. Only it is so skilfully directed that it flows along very pleasantly. Strong soundtrack. I don't like the genre per se, but the songs can still be good and that's the case. Moreover, it is all attractively portrayed. The film isn't particularly striking or embellished, but that's probably what makes it enjoyable. I really like Scott Cooper's style so far. Add to that the strong cast, with of course Jeff Bridges in the most rewarding role (and one that's just right for him) and you know it.

3.5
