A great drama with a captivating story and some enjoyable chess scenes (especially for fans). I especially enjoyed the games in the park. The interludes about Bobby Fischer were also very interesting.

The acting also deserves praise. Max Pomeranc is fantastic as a restrained chess player with his heart in the right place. But Joe Mantegna steals the show for me, an excellent actor whose appreciation I'm growing ever more.

3.5*

A good film about a seven-year-old boy who turns out to be a chess prodigy. A fairly captivating story that effectively captures the pressure exerted on the boy. The story of chess grandmaster Bobby Fisher is also beautifully incorporated into the film. Good acting, and you don't need to be a chess prodigy to appreciate this film.

Still, a rather weak film. It could easily have been about any other sport, like chess; the game itself wasn't really shown/played no role (I think I even saw a castling error...).
