May 8, 1939, all of Rome marches out for the historic meeting between Hitler and Mussolini. For those who cannot attend, the report will be broadcast throughout the city. In this drama on the eve of the Second World War there is unity of time, place and action. Everything takes place in one day, from morning to night, but we learn a lot about the past of the two main characters. The venue is one apartment building, but the marching music in the background comes from the historic event in the city. Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni played burlesque roles in their younger days, but here they play two complex characters who live in conflict with their environment and with themselves. The comic side notes come from a beo that sounds like a man with a pinched nose and from a loose lamp.
The colors have been deliberately filtered out to give a drab appearance, symbolic of the colorlessness of the fascist regime. Mussolini - whose granddaughter has a supporting role - wanted to create an artificial society with a false ideal of militarism and masculinity. A woman was only allowed to do the housework and bear children. A bachelor had to pay twice as much in taxes; a gay man was banished to Sardinia. Many ordinary Italians, such as the husband and the janitor, were involved in the system without realizing its cruelty. Nice movie. Better and more exciting than I expected. The game is particularly good. There is so much to read from Sophia Loren/Antonietta's face. Nice how she does that. The family scene felt realistic and the bond between Antonietta and Gabriele feels genuine. Good chemistry between the two. I think it's a really beautiful story, sensitive and moving. Because the locations are not very variable and it is largely a dialogue, it also reminded me a bit of a play. I think the marching music in the background is a valuable addition. I think it enhances the atmosphere. Sometimes my attention waned, then I was less interested in the conversation. That doesn't mean I don't think it's strong. An understated, big movie! 4.5*

Antonietta as a housewife and mother of as many children as possible (even with allowances). No time for herself, no more a woman, but first and foremost a husband or mother. In addition, Gabriele, who is being targeted for being gay. Under Mussolini, that is punished. The extra tax for singles is one of many measures. By chance they meet and give each other the hope they need.
A beautiful film in a sepia tone in which Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni play a somewhat atypical role (as we are used to from them) and carry the film with ease. Beautiful shots and also demonstrated the Mussolini regime before the war in a small way.
Weird that Mussolini's granddaughter (and Sophia Loren's niece) starred in the film as a teenager. Either she wasn't too involved with politics yet, or she didn't really understand the film's approach. Curious what the brother-in-law of Sophia Loren (son of Mussolini) thought about this film, he apparently barely spoke about his family past.
