Legacy of tragedy.

That the son of the famous Bruce would be destined for an action-packed life in Hollywood, unfortunately turned out differently. From a tragic legacy to a legacy of tragedy. Here he is still in his post-puberty years in Chinese cinemaland. Unfortunately, the film turns out to be a fairly standard action work that only temporarily revives when Brandon shows the tricks taught by his father.

Average.

Average.

Yu's 80s work doesn't seem to differ all that much from your average HK 80s production. It's not really my thing, especially since the serious action is often saved until the end. The first hour is often quite boring.

This film is no exception. Okay, you can look at the son of (shameless this poster by the way), but without action he doesn't know how to bring much. Then the role of Michael Wong as the bad guy is more interesting. Actually suits him better than playing the good guy I have to say.

The first hour rarely comes to life, fortunately the film does have an ending to die for. Heavily exaggerated action scenes (of course), but everything does get nicely torn to shreds. The better gun work, so to speak. The physical action remains fairly limited, although Lee is still impressive in those rare moments.

So just persevere. The beginning of the film is average HK filler, the action at the end is above average mayhem. Fortunately Yu went in a different direction later.

2.5*

Reviewed on the new Blu-ray release from 88Films with Cantonese spoken language.

Reasonable Hong Kong action film where Brandon Lee is framed for murder by his best friend Michael Wong and has to go to prison for eight years. Later he returns to settle the score. Very cool supporting role by Mang Hoi, who of course played in dozens of HK martial arts & action films. Soundtrack is also cool.

In the original script there would have been a lot more focus on martial arts, also the fight against Bolo would have been longer. Brandon refused this, because he didn't want to become a clone of his father and wanted to focus more on action movies. Still you see some moves of Bruce Lee:

- the side kick in the alley (his father's favorite kick)

- the way he raises his finger at his opponent (Big Boss)

- the blow to the throat (Russian Petrov Fist of Fury)

- the punch in the stomach against Bolo (Big Boss and Fist of Fury)

If you look at the American movie poster you would expect a martial arts movie, Brandon with clenched fists in a white shirt with his father in the background. While Brandon had clearly stated in the contract that his father's name and photo were not to be used. What had they done, they had an artist draw his father. Really cunning marketing to circumvent the contract terms. I think Brandon was furious.

Also fun to see Hector Martinez in the special features. I've been following his channel on Youtube for a long time, so I was already familiar with his bizarre collection of Bruce and Brandon Lee.
