Jeanne, an attractive philosophy teacher, doesn't want to stay in her fiancé's raunchy apartment when he's out of town for a while. She decides to accept an invitation from Natasha, whom she meets at a party. Her father is always with his girlfriend, so Jeanne can sleep well there. Good, but somehow stiff and good. That is remarkable, for a film that goes into such depth with people who hardly know each other. In other words, it is understandable that you are more reserved towards strangers, but if you go into such depth anyway, it also seems to me that you are not afraid of hard differences of opinion, provocation and escalation. away. If it does come, it really doesn't mean much. The ongoing story about the chain was very good.
But maybe it was also part of the environment of those people: terrible classical music, stale books and clothing that seems to come more from the years "fill it in, old and dusty". Dusty mess, I have nothing to do with it. All the better that the film is simply fascinating. It remains that for a film that is so thematically related to spring, relatively little is done with it, except for some nice pictures. I had lost the whole rhythm of place and time anyway (partly due to sometimes sloppy editing)? The intent, I'm guessing?

In the first part of his Four Seasons, the typical stylistic features of Éric Rohmer are present. The psychological motivations of the characters gradually become clear through the dialogues. Natasha, the teenage daughter who wants to manipulate reality, gets the lid on the nose. Jeanne looks at things more passively and distantly. A funny scene is when Igor asks her permission three times, but is actually too modest with his wishes.
Sometimes it threatens to become a bit too static, but visually it is nicely done. Floral motifs are present on clothes and furniture, in pots and gardens. Blue and white are the dominant colours, supplemented a few times with red to form the French flag. Schumann's music fits in perfectly: patiently built up, with a lot of sonority and depth. You can see that Florence Darel actually plays the piano.

My tenth Rohmer meanwhile, the last of the seasonal quartet. Obviously the least. Perhaps I experienced here the idea that the average viewer experiences with all his other films. Here I was barely or not at all gripped by the story, by the characters. Aimless and dull.
Summer and autumn shoot out a bit. Winter is also decent. This was a foul ball as far as I'm concerned. I didn't get jitters in the stomach, something you can expect from spring. Some flowers on the table and some paintings on the wall are not going to change that. The thing is that the dialogues - not an unimportant item with Rohmer - don't really catch on and are just about nothing.
