At first glance, this seems like the film adaptation of a penny novel, but somehow it still fascinates.

Traditionally, a sailor has a sweetheart in every port, but Gaspard is stuck with three almost sweethearts in the same port, which causes choice overload. He can have the best conversations with Margot (Amanda Langlet - known for the equally summery Pauline à la Plage), but she seems mainly interested in friendship. Solène is even more beautiful and perhaps easier to get. He had an appointment with Lena, but she turns out to be the least sympathetic. The denouement of this romantic tangle is that he doesn't get any of the three, but he will still have good holiday memories.

To visualize the walks along the Breton coast, a cart with a camera drove alongside the actors. Rohmer came up with the idea of hiding a small microphone in an actress's hair. The ramparts and the dunes are also discussed. The sea motif is constantly present. Even inside there is always a book or a seascape in the background. The fragment with the real sailor could almost have come from a documentary. Gaspard's sailor song is a bit too complicated to play entirely on the diatonic accordion, an instrument of Breton folk music. The delightful dialogues, the natural acting style and the maritime decor bring the youthful holiday mood right into it.

It's like that with Eric Rohmer's films, you don't like it three times or you can enjoy yourself with it. The latter applies to me, but his films are rarely high-flyers. This summer story will give you a happy feeling. Not least because of the images of the towns and beaches of the Breton coast. Rohmer's strength lies in the fact that he portrays the mess of young people with relationships and love, without it all becoming too dramatic.

In this case we see one Gaspard, who is on vacation and waiting for his 'fiancee' Lena, a rather capricious type, as it turns out later. In the pancake house he meets the nice, but serious Margot, who wants something with him, but only if Gaspard clearly chooses her. And then there is also the extrovert Solène who sees something in him. But Gaspard can't choose. A character to annoy you, as is the case for almost all main characters in Rohmer's films. Just wait and see! Which is also a fixed value: there is never a happy ending. Refreshing right?

As a counterpart to Gaspard's jellyfish, we get three gorgeous girls who also regularly don't wear much. If that isn't a summer story I don't know what is.
