Tsar plot

1565. Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible suffers a frustrating defeat in the long war against Poland. He attributes this to the traitors he has all around him. To expose and tackle them, he creates a Personal Elite Guard: 'the Tsar's Dogs', recognizable by the dog's head emblem on their saddle. A Tsar's Dogs plunge Russia into carnage. The leader of the Russian church is also hiding in a monastery, while Ivan thinks he is predicting certain signs that the End of Time is coming...

What you call a calm build-up. The film opens with a headless, struggling chicken that colours the snow red. A harbinger of what is to come. Although the repulsiveness of the torture/execution content is very mild. Not that it is disappointing. The scene in which the new torture instruments are tested with enthusiasm is, as mentioned, funny. The bear is very playful in the fight and does not seem drugged. If I have to mention a negative point, it is the meagre Polish contribution. But that is personal. The film focuses on the two protagonists, with Oleg Yankovski playing the role of Metropolitan Filip and Piotr Mamonov playing the role of the Tsar. And that is a pleasure to watch.
