Elliott Gould has a real film noir as the chain-smoking detective Marlowe. I didn't find the detective story that special and didn't do much for me, but the way Marlowe behaves throughout the film is priceless. That interrogation in the commissioner's office at the beginning and the way he goes to visit that rehab center on his own after he was kicked out had something irresistibly hilarious, just like the already mentioned shit with his cat. Efforts are made to make Marlowe an ordinary bum who could just live next door, but that also makes him so sympathetic to both the audience and the seedy characters he meets in this film.

And then always that same song that is repeated in all kinds of versions, from a jazzy version to even funeral music with wind players in Mexico . Annoying you could say, but then also separate to do something like this. I didn't even know Mr Universe was in this too.

Altman has created a wonderfully atmospheric film with The Long Goodbye.

Also thanks to the strong acting of Gould who puts down one of the coolest PI's here. Constantly having a cigarette, his movements and the way he talks is really great. His interaction with the cat and the other strong actors is also very nice. The story is presented in a very nice way and contains enough elements and fun and/or strong moments to keep you fascinated throughout the film. And that ending was a wonderful pay-off for all the effort Marlow has put in. And that music stays in your head for a long time.

The story is not always strong, but it is also about the atmosphere and Marlowe. Altman uses a striking style in which Marlowe is portrayed as a strange guy, but with full conviction. There's a lot of subtle humor in it, like with that cat and Marlowe's neighbors. Furthermore, the music is good (comes back again and again in the film in different ways), nice supporting roles and the climax is quite surprising.
