La Milagrosa plot

Eduardo, son of an influential businessman, is violently kidnapped by guerrillas while traveling with his friend. The constant movements of the camp in the jungles of Colombia, the debilitating uncertainty and last but not least the loneliness bring him to the edge of madness. The danger comes from all sides, from the ruthless jungle, from the enemy paramilitaries and from the guerrillas themselves, who can no longer and will not wait for the ransom. While his parents frantically negotiate with his captors and desperately contemplate a violent liberation, each new day may be Eduardo's last… . .

Impressively realistic film. The film shows what such a guerrilla war entails and who's on which side. You also see how people end up in it. Is this even a choice? It's certainly not an easy one. Often, background, where you come from, how you grew up, and whether you're rich or poor play a major role!

The role of the kidnapped Eduardo, who is central to this film, is well-played. The hopelessness and despair are palpable.

4*

A good film in which the son of a wealthy family is kidnapped by a guerrilla group. It's violent, and despite being set in sunny Colombia, it's grimly shot. The interplay between the hostages and the hostage-takers is the film's central theme and is therefore well-developed.

Saturday evening, I started working on this Guerrilla War, also known as La Milagrosa, which I'd picked up at an outlet on a whim, with the only option being to just try it out. And while it wasn't bad at all, I also didn't quite get the vibe.

The intro already paints a mixed picture of the chaotic life in such a country where attacks, fighting, and rape are commonplace. The transition to the upstart rich kid Eduardo falling into the clutches of rebels, in turn, reveals various facets of life in Colombia, where no soul, rich or poor, is safe. The story surrounding Eduardo is clear, with his capture and the extortion of his family. What follows is a longer phase of often disturbing images of conflict, the dangers of the jungle, and the stress and fear of the hostage, which sometimes takes on hallucinatory proportions.

The film's weaknesses lie mainly in a certain sense of chaos. The film frequently feels a bit chaotic, partly due to the camerawork and editing. There's also a disturbing overexposure at the beginning, and I miss a little more storyline and depth in the characters, which are mostly snapshots. But these aren't necessarily the film's biggest drawbacks, with the final shot where Eduardo is physically out of the jungle, but his mind/spirit clearly isn't, still lingering.

La Milagrosa is therefore primarily an okay film, though a genuine connection and engagement with the film are somewhat lacking. Therefore, not a top rating, but a good average rating in my opinion.
