Fighting Man of the Plains plot
"RENEGADE of the LAW...then he became MARSHAL of the GREAT PLAINS"
Lawrence (Kansas), August, 1863. Jim Dancer, in search of his brother's killer, joins Quantrell's gang. Yancey, one of the gang members, is the biggest reason for the gang's reputation and bad name. Yancey meets Evelyn Slocum and tells Dancer that Evelyn's father is responsible for the death of Dancer's brother. Dancer takes revenge and kills Slocum. However, the real culprit is Bert Slucom, his brother. As the Civil War draws to a close in 1865, Dancer becomes a man on the run, pursued by Slocum and George Cummings, a Pleasanton agency detective. Dancer gets caught only then finds out he killed the wrong man. Cummings is fatally injured while crossing a river. When they are found, Dancer assumes the identity of Cummings. By coincidence, he is appointed Marshal in the town of Lanyard. But Bert Slocum is still after him and a few people in Lanyard aren't too happy with the new Marshal either.
