Private detective DL Trees is hired by mayoral candidate John M. Rhodes. Trees must prevent Rhodes from getting negative publicity. However, there is persistent gossip in the city that Rhodes wants to kill someone. When someone is actually killed, Rhodes is the prime suspect. During the frenetic election period, Trees must try to prove Rhodes' innocence by finding the real killer.
