An unknown gem from Swedish director Jan Troell.

Gene Hackman plays Zandy Allan, a tough guy with a soft heart. He lives alone on a remote cattle ranch and has placed a personal ad in the newspaper. He's looking for a woman to marry and have children with. Hannah, played by Liv Ullmann, is the woman who responded. Living together is difficult because Zandy wants Hannah to be submissive to him. Hannah is now going to stand up for herself.

It's incredible that this film is so unknown; I think few have seen it. This film deserves to be seen. The sublime cinematography, music, and costumes capture the atmosphere of the late 19th century, when many immigrants settled in the US and there was great inequality between men and women. A simple, captivating, and powerful story.

Have I mentioned Gene Hackman and Liv Ullman yet? They're both absolutely brilliant. Hackman has a touching way of portraying a bully. It's truly remarkable. I've seen many of Hackman's films, but I'm quietly thinking this might be his best performance ever (yes, I've seen The French Connection and The Conversation).

As I said, this western drama deserves to be seen.

5*

A forgotten film.

Is that perhaps simply because Hackman creates such a device, a character who, throughout the entire runtime, never exudes even the slightest bit of charm, kindness, or humanity? Only in the final minutes does something emerge, but by then it was far, far too late for me. Beautifully played, certainly. Just like Liv Ullmann plays her role beautifully, but you constantly have to yell at the screen.

I don't really have much else to say about it. The film doesn't have much more than Hackman and Ullmann, and it's actually a rather narrow film that focuses entirely on that single subject. Well done, but not necessarily a pleasant or enjoyable film. Perhaps it's rightly overlooked; after all, there's much more positive and enjoyable viewing material out there.
