Bram Fischer plot

In 1963 South Africa, where discontent against inequality is growing, one afternoon in the village of Rivonia, the leaders of the ANC are arrested during a raid. To this group is added a ninth member, who had been captured before: Nelson Mandela. The white regime is very keen to set the group as an example and to have it sentenced to the death penalty. Respected lawyer Bram Fischer takes on their defense. What the regime does not know is that Fischer should have been the tenth suspect. That is the start of a process in which Bram Fischer treads difficult paths. When the secret police gradually discover Bram Fischer's dual role, he is faced with a moral dilemma: does he prefer the defense of his clients over his own safety and that of his family?

The not overly talented Van de Velde tries a bit too much to deliver the perfect film and therefore puts an excess of information in Bram Fischer which becomes quite irritating towards the end, but all in all still a more than adequate. The story has already been told, from other perspectives, more often and it is a compliment that despite the fact that the outcome is already known in advance, the film is quite exciting and remains captivating. A few errors and/or improbabilities (was it really true that a lawyer calls the public prosecutor a James Bond adept in 1963? The scenes of joy when the judge has given his verdict seem quite unreal, rarely have I seen people who react so bizarrely joyfully to a life sentence), you just have to accept. Switching off your brain can therefore help occasionally. What also helps is if you are a fan of a courtroom film, because that is of course where Bram Fischer is largely set. Not the great film it wants to be, but it is easy to watch and many details are correct. Strong role by Muller too, he never convinced me in Gooische Vrouwen with his overacting, but here the accent and his performance work, despite the fact that he looks a bit too young for a lawyer with such old kids.

A bit too long, but definitely a beautiful film.

Beautiful film set in the 60s during the dictatorial rule in South Africa. A wake up call to protect democracy.
